Menu Madness: Tu B'Shvat

Special Edition

Tu B’Shvat, the New Year for trees, is celebrated on the 15th day of Shvat.

Dinner will reflect the idea that Tu B’Shvat is considered the birthday of all trees. We’ll be throwing fruit a birthday party. Dinner will be served on birthday plates with streamers and balloons decorating the kitchen. Our centerpiece will be dried fruit on skewers. We’ll open with a fresh fruit salad, followed by some chicken on a bed of apricot rice. Dessert will be a strawberry short cake and hot apple cider. The adults may drink some wine while the kids will have grape juice with their meal.

I am going to send my kids off to school with their bellies full of Tu B’Shvat goodness. Because we are celebrating the New Year for trees, our breakfast is going to reflect all the delicious fruit that trees provide us. I’ll begin with fruit smoothies. The base of the smoothie will be orange juice and I’ll toss in some strawberries, mango, and cantaloupe. The beauty of the smoothie is you have to try pretty hard to mess it up. I’ll have cut up strawberries and bananas for my kids to toss into their cereal. But, no doubt, the special treat they will head towards will be Fruity Pebbles.

Snacks in their lunch bags will be fruit (as usual) but also fruit by the foot and fruit roll ups.

Enjoy a delicious holiday! Happy Tu B’Shvat.
