ChallahCrumbs’ Presents: The Book of Yonah and Lessons in Kindness

With the start of a new year, we’re adding our very own podcast here at ChallahCrumbs! Today I’m talking about the book of Yonah and the messages of kindness throughout.

This year in review

Rosh HaShana asks us to reflect back on our year. Most days I need to remind myself to brush my teeth so introspection falls somewhere below pairing up the 173 (note the odd number) socks sitting in their very own laundry basket in my laundry room. But as a good Jew, one with a strong sense of Jewish guilt, I decided to give a moment or two to look back on the year and reflect. Here’s what I’ve broken our year down to…

Surviving Purim

Purim is about a lot of things. It is about the story of Esther. It’s about celebrating the evil decree that never took place. We celebrate by listening to the Purim story, by giving food to our friends and family, by holding a great feast and by giving charity. Let’s Make David Porat/Eli Shur Famous

This website, challahcrumbs.com, that I have created and love so much focuses on all things that are wonderful about Judaism. It focuses on holidays and families and great food and creative crafts. It does not focus on bad.

Showing Appreciation this Sukkot

To me the holiday of Succot is all about appreciation. According to our Sages, eating in a Sukkah for 8 days demonstrates our faith in God and His benevolence. We show God that we are willing to leave the security of our homes and live under his protection. We let God know that we appreciate all He has done for us to sustain us everyday.

Surviving Yom Kippur with Young Kids at Home

25 hours may never seem so long! Juggling kids, prayer, and perhaps some self-reflection is pretty close to impossible. Here are some of our tried and true tips to surviving Yom Kippur. Please add your own tips below:

Travel Tips for Moses

As Shavuot heads our way, I’ve been thinking about Moshe in the desert. It took him 40 years to travel an estimated 1400 miles to bring the Jews out of Egypt and lead them to the land of Israel. And while I’ve spent my fair share of time in Jewish Day School and understand the reverence we are supposed to have for our Jewish heroes and leaders, I truly believe I could have taught Moshe a thing or two about traveling with family.

Giving Mom the Gift of Kindness

From our Friends at Areyvut.

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and, as usual, you’re scrambling to find the perfect gift for mom. You’ve gone through all the obvious choices: Cards, flowers, fancy soaps, chocolate…boring!
