The story of Purim can be seen as the story of Esther. Esther is an unlikely hero. She is taken to the King’s palace, where she becomes Achashverosh’s bride. She keeps her nationality a secret from her husband. When the Jews find themselves in danger, facing Haman’s cruel decree, it is only after Mordechai intervenes that Esther takes action. Esther is a reluctant hero.

Who is a hero? Does a hero need a cape or a superpower? Can only a grown up be a hero? The story of Esther is really the story of someone taking responsibility and standing up for what she knows is right. Challenge your kids to find heroes in their world. What heroes do they know? Point out that heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Ask them about fictional heroes and real life heroes. Point out moments when your children have acted heroically.
